Description
Island camping at its finest is to be found on Alger Island. This boat access-only campground is located on Fourth Lake, the fourth lake in the Fulton Chain of Lakes. The campground combines proximity to local activities with island remoteness for a truly unique camping experience.
Geography:
Alger Island Campground is located on Fourth Lake, part of the Fulton Chain of Lakes.
Recreation:
Motor boats, rowboats, and canoes are allowed. Anglers will enjoy fishing for lake trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, and landlocked Atlantic salmon. A hiking trail winds around the island, and miles of state-maintained trails are nearby.
Facilities:
The campground offers lean-to sites with fireplaces, hibachis, picnic tables and pit toilets; and tent sites with pit toilets, fireplaces and hibachis. The park also features a picnic area and hiking trails. Fourth Lake Day-Use Area serves as campground headquarters, where registration and permits are issued for Alger Island. A state-owned boat launch, with a ramp for launching larger, motorized boats, is located on Route 28, in the village of Inlet.

A few minutes' drive leads to shopping and sightseeing attractions in the nearby hamlet of Old Forge.

From NYS Thruway: Take Exit 31 at Utica. Take Route 12 North to Alder Creek. Follow Rte 28 to Old Forge. Turn right at the Post Office onto Gilbert St. Turn left onto Park Ave. Turn right onto South Shore Road, to Petrie Road. Drive 3/4 mile to the Fourth Lake Picnic Area. From Route 28, Inlet: Take South Shore Road to Petrie Road and drive one mile to the Fourth Lake Picnic Area.
